Dave was born in Osceola 14 January 1944, to Dan and Marilyn Lewis Foster. He received his early education in Greenfield, Des Moines and Indianola, graduating from Indianola High School in 1963. Dave spent the summer of 1963 in Osceola managing the swimming pool. He then attended Iowa State University and Grandview College and worked at Pittsburg-Des Moines Steel Co. prior to joining the Air Force.

Dave enlisted in the Air Force in 1966, and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) at San Antonio, Texas for basic training. Following basic, he went to Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas for training in the medical corps. From Texas, he was transferred to Gunter AFB in Montgomery, Alabama for further and more technical training as a medical laboratory technician. After completion of his training, he was stationed at the Military Airlift Command Hospital at Scott AFB in Belleville, Illinois where he remained for the rest of his enlistment. In addition to providing medical and dental services, the MAC hospital at Scott was a referral center for treatment of tuberculosis. The hospital also operated a 120-bed casualty staging unit for channeling patients including the wounded from Vietnam. The staff received seven outstanding unit citations and two Presidential unit citations during a two-year period. Dave received the Air Force Commendation Medal for numerous blood collection trips and air evacuation efforts.

Dave was discharged from the service as a Staff Sergeant (E-5) in 1970. He currently lives in Greenwood, Indiana and manages the computer services for the laboratory at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
